Stream Mac media to VLC

VLC can browse media sources on the local network. Media Server Pro supplies the Mac-side server so your files appear in VLC without copying them over.

VLC setup

  1. Put your Mac and playback device on the same home network.
  2. Open Media Server Pro on your Mac, add your media folders, and click Start Server.
  3. Open VLC on the device you want to watch from.
  4. Go to Local Network or Universal Plug'n'Play.
  5. Open Media Server Pro and choose a file to play.

Keep in mind

  • Browse your Mac from VLC's Local Network area.
  • Keep files in their original folders.
  • Use VLC's broad codec support on the receiving device.

Common questions

Why does VLC show the server slowly?

Local network discovery can take a moment. Refresh VLC's local network view and make sure both devices are on the same subnet.

Can I use VLC on the same Mac?

Yes, although the main benefit is browsing from another device on your network.

Does VLC need a username or password?

No. Media server discovery is local-network based, not account based.
